Literacy-rich science lessons based on the real world.

LDC and Battelle Education have teamed up to create a free collection of STEM lessons and modules for middle and high school students.

DESIGN

How do you design solutions to real-world problems? Our template encourages students to read RFPs, research and create solutions, and present and defend their work.

DATA ANALYSIS

How do you encourage the scientific process? Our template gets students to ask questions, gather knowledge, develop and carry out testing, gather data, and more.

Our mission: get kids to read and write like scientists

How do students develop data fluency? Our template helps you build lessons that encourage kids to isolate the data selection, analysis, and reporting process.

We created three standards-aligned, literacy-rich module templates built around the design and development process Battelle scientists use every day. We then gave those templates to five amazing teachers who brought them to life in the classroom.

EXPERIMENTATION

See middle school teacher Kris Stevens' students develop a method for collecting their experimental data.

The development, implementation, and analysis of a controlled experiment is the backbone of science. This module will help students through this scientific process.

Watch Erika Reeves' class use graphic organizers to get everything they’ve learned about photosynthesis out of their head, and onto paper.

This template allows students to investigate a question they have with the intent of learning information that can better society or to re-test information to help prove it in a real-world application.

Surf & Turf

This template is meant to be applied in a ‘real-world’ manner—optimally driven by authentic partnerships in your community. It’s based on the process Battelle engineers go through in designing and prototyping solutions—a process that has lead to the Xerox machine, the CD, and countless other innovations!

Design

Production is the essence of STEM education. Purposeful production is the definition of design. The design module shows students what scientific thinking and practice yield in the real world.

MODULE 2

Watch high school teacher Tammy Beilke and her students walk us through a lesson for her Catching Sun with a Donut module.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Each of the Battelle/LDC modules are made up of a collection of standards-aligned lessons, developed and tested by scientists and science teachers.

More about Battelle Education

Literacy is the foundation necessary for nearly every type of learning across all disciplines. We believe that every day, every US student has an opportunity to grow—as a reader, a writer, a listener, and a speaker. And every day, every teacher has the opportunity to accelerate that growth.

The Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) seeks to ensure that every student in America graduates from high school with the literacy skills they need for success in college and the real world. We do this by providing teachers with structured, but flexible, tools that can be used again and again with any program, practice, or curriculum to drive student growth. For more information about LDC, visit LDC.org. You can also access our robust curriculum library of free lessons, tasks, and templates, at LDC CoreTools.

Battelle Education is a nonprofit subsidiary of Battelle dedicated to innovation in education. Battelle Education brings the same pragmatic, problem-solving approach to education that Battelle brings to the wide world of science and technology challenges. Battelle Education helps communities come together to build their own STEM-focused schools.

We're providing training to teachers to help them reach more students. Battelle Education is transforming the promise of STEM education into real impact. Successful projects include the Ohio STEM Learning Network, Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, and the national STEMx network.
